Why Use Mozy Online Backup?

Free backup is finally here. Mozy Remote Backup.
Mozy online backup can be used on both a PC and a Mac and have different plans for personal and business use. If you are new to the world of online backup, you can see how Mozy compares to others by visiting our Online Backup Reviews page. Mozy is easy to install and set up and in most cases you can be backing up your system in just minutes.

It isn’t a matter of IF your hard drive will fail, it’s simply a matter of WHEN.

Being in the technology business ourselves, we’ve tried just about every kind of backup system there is. We have used floppy disks (remember those?), CD’s, DVD’s, Tape drives and external hard drives. Currently our strategy combines Apple’s Time Machine (yes, we’re mac junkies here) with Mozy Online Backup. The external hard drives allows for quick recovery and Mozy is the backup to the backup. By that we mean that if something happened that prevented us from getting to our normal backup (like theft or fire) we still have our files.

Our Review of Mozy Online Backup

Mozy

Review Summary

Mozy is consitently rated one of the top online backup services. Their recent release of Mozy 2.0 has made them even more popular. Mozy maintains multiple datacenters in both the USA and the United Kingdom and has been around quite a while, meaning they earned their way to the top-tier of online backup companies.

Mozy Pricing

In 2011, they stopped offering an unlimited plan. Their new pricing tier for home users (MozyHome) gives you 50GB of online backup for 1 computer at $5.99 per month. For just a little more ($9.99 per month) you can backup up two additional computers (a total of 3) and store up to 125GB.

If you are a business user and want to backup multiple computers and servers, their MozyPro product is the product you will want to sign up for. They charge $3.95 per month for workstations and $6.95 per month for servers in addition to $0.50 per gigabyte of storage per month.

Installation and setup

If you have cable or DSL, Mozy 2.0 is a quick download. When you install the software, it starts setting itself up right away. All you need to do is enter your email address & password (or create a new account) and the program takes it from there – it scans your computer to find files you need backed up and displays a nice little summary for you.

If you want to make changes, you can make them on the next screen, without even leaving the setup program. Most users, however, will find the defaults to be perfect. Next, Mozy calculates how much data in total is going to be backed up and lets you know when your first backup will be complete. That’s it! You’re up and running.

Using the software

The new Mozy 2.0 is a much more simplified interface. You can easily configure the settings such as notifications, bandwidth usage and scheduling. Also useful is the status window, you can see exactly what is going on – the current file being transferred and percentage complete is shown along with the total number of files backed up and what’s in queue.

Knowing what is/has been backed up and what is not is also made easy thanks to their icon overlays. If you see a green checkmark, the file is backed up – if you see a red exclaimation point, it’s not. It doesn’t really get any simpler than that!

Restoring Files

With Mozy, you have 3 different ways to restore files. The simplest of which applies if you simply overwrote your file. Simply find the file in Windows Explorer, right-click and choose “Restore Previous Version”. You will then be presented with a list of the previous versions of the file and you can choose which one you want to restore.

The second way to restore files is to navigate to the MozyHome Online Backup drive in your Computer. Browse the different folders until you find the file you want to restore, then right-click on it. You will be able to restore it to its original location, or if you wish, click “Restore To” and you can choose another folder on the computer where you want the file saved.

The third way is to do a restore via the Mozy.com website. Simply launch a web browser and visit Mozy.com, enter your email address and password to login, then look for the link that says “Restore Files”. Next, you can search for the file by name or browse for it, view the different categories in your backup set or simply restore everything.

In Closing

If you’re thinking of trying Mozy but not quite sure, the best option for you is to try their 2GB free version, which never expires, and take it for a test drive yourself.

What we liked about Mozy

The thing we like most about Mozy is how easy it is to use. You really don’t need to even think about it, it’s just always running in the background, quietly backing up your data.

Another thing we love about it is the secure encryption of your data. The way their encryption works, even if their data center was compromised, your data would be worthless to the hacker.

Their web interface and virtual drive make it easy to restore a file when you need it. If your computer completely crashes, you have the option to have your data sent to you on a DVD, that is pretty cool too.

Mozy

What we didn’t like about Mozy

One of the biggest disappointments we have with Mozy is that they no longer offer an unlimited backup plan. When we originally signed up with them this was our deciding factor. As web developers, we keep tons of large Photoshop files and other miscellaneous files related to web projects and the unlimited plan saved us a lot of money.

The other drawback is that if you accidentally delete a file off of your computer, Mozy’s software just kind of assumes you didn’t need it anymore, so it removes it from your online backup. If you catch the mistake within 30 days you can restore the file, but in reality, if you accidentally delete a file you don’t use all the time you might not notice until it is too late.
